Welcome to Mr. MacLeod's 3B Class News!
I hope you had a fun and relaxing summer holiday. I am excited to be back at school and I hope you are too. To help make this school year a success, here is some important information that you should know.
Uniforms
ALL students are expected to wear their proper uniform every day. This goes for homeroom class and all program classes (Health & P.E., Music, IL & ESL).
Pick Up Attendance
If your child will be absent from school, please inform Ms. Ng at [email protected] and myself at [email protected]
If your child usually goes home on the bus, but you will be picking him/her up instead, please inform Ms. Ng and myself as soon as possible using the contacts listed above. Your child’s safety is of the utmost importance to us!
Labeling Clothing & School Supplies
Please write your child’s name on ALL items that they bring to school, including school bags, water bottles, school supplies (such as pencil cases), and schooluniforms (you can write your child’s name on all clothing labels). This helps us to identify lost items.
Class Website
This is where you can find important information, such as dates for extracurricular activities, tests, assignments, and homework. Field trips and special events will also be announced on the website. Simply click the links on the side of the page to access the information. Please note, I try not to give homework on the weekend. I feel this is time for the students to relax and spend time with their families.
Birthdays
Due to the Policy Manual, birthday parties and celebrations are not allowed in Grade 3. Please note that sending treats or gifts for the class is not allowed.
Gifts for the Teacher
Due to recent changes in policy, a teacher cannot accept any gifts from students or teachers. We do enjoy a nice card or email, though!
Important Forms Notices
Please make sure to check your child’s homework folder every day for important forms and notices that may need to be signed and returned to school. If any money is to be returned with a form, please place the money in a sealed bag or envelope with your child’s name on it and hand it in attached to the signed form.
Students should return their homework folders to school EVERY DAY, whether they have notes or not.
Textbooks:
Students will keep all textbooks at school during the year. If they need to bring a textbook home for review or study purposes I will ask them to pack it and bring it home for the night. On the first day of school, students will be sent home with all textbooks. Please sign the loaned textbook form and return all textbooks to school the following day.
Email:
Please feel free to contact me anytime by emailing [email protected]. I will try to reply to you within 24 hours.
Thank you,
Mr. MacLeod

Good afternoon Parents of 3B,
A presentation for the students in 3B has already been made about this, but I would like to reiterate on here that a student in our classroom has got a severe peanut allergy.
That being said, the student in our class cannot eat anything with peanuts and/or was made in a facility with nuts. Therefore, please talk to your children about the importance of:
- Not sharing snacks at school in case someone is OR may be allergic
- Not putting their hands on that individual's desk after snacktime
- Washing hands before and after they have finished their snacks
Thank you for your help with getting out this message.
Have a great day,
Mr. MacLeod

"Dear Parents and Guardians of Students in Grade 1 – Grade 6,
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to our Open School Evening to be held on Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
The Open School Evening begins at 6:00 pm in your child’s Homeroom classroom. The Homeroom teacher will discuss classroom expectation and routines including the morning routine, the timetable, learning technologies used, and will introduce the class online learning platform. The curriculum expectations, units of study, and the assessment strategies employed throughout the year will be presented as well. Program teachers – Music, Health and Physical Education, and International Language – will also be visiting each Homeroom for an introduction during this time. The focus of this evening is on our program and not individual student progress.
As many of our families have more than one child in the School, we understand that you may not be able to remain for the entire presentation in one classroom. You are most welcome to stay for only a short time and join your other child’s/children’s Homeroom at any time during the 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm session.
One additional information session is being offered. Parents of students enrolled in the English as a Second Language Program (ESL) are invited to the Information Session (ESL) beginning at 5:15 pm. This presentation will provide an overview of the ESL Program, the curriculum, and an introduction to the ESL teachers. Parents of students in Grade 1-3 will meet in the Auditorium and parents of students in Grade 4-6 will meet in the Elementary Gym.
Please be reminded that the Courtyard is closed during this event. Students are welcome to accompany their parents but will be expected to attend the information session and remain with their parents for the duration of presentation(s).

"Dear Parents and Guardians,
The name “Terry Fox” is known throughout Canada and the World. Terry Fox became a Canadian national hero when he began his ‘Marathon of Hope’ — a cross-country run to raise money for cancer research. More information can be found at: http://www.terryfox.org/hongkong/
This year, Delia School of Canada will once again participate in this very important family event. Last year, as a School community, we raised over $6000 (CDN) for cancer research and this year hope to double this amount. We have created a fundraising page and we encourage our school community to come out on November 9th, 2019 to walk or run in support of this very important cause. Donating online is fast and easy. Simply, go to http://www.terryfox.ca/DSC where you can join our School team and/or pledge an amount to support this important cause. Please note that all donations are in Canadian currency.
We encourage all families to join our fundraising efforts and come to the run at Renaissance College on November 9th, 2019. We had an excellent turn out last year and hope to have even more participation this year. Our team has registered for the 3km run, but you are free to join in the 5km or 10km runs if that is your preference. Registration opens at 10 am and the event starts at 10:30am with the Opening Ceremony.
To help facilitate access to run, there will be a bus departing from DSC Tai Koo Shing to Renaissance College at 9:00 am and returning at 1:00 pm. Cost for the bus is $40.00 per person return trip. If you are interested, please complete the form below and submit it by October 4th. Please note availability on the bus is limited and based on reply slip return date. You can also take the MTR and we will meet you there. Students in Grade PG1 to 6 can only attend when accompanied by parent or guardian. The School is not providing supervision for this community event. Please wear your School PE or House shirt to show our School spirit!
We are very pleased to promote this year’s Terry Fox Run as we encourage our students to develop a sense of volunteerism and goodwill. Thank you in advance for your support and hope to see you on November 9th!
Sincerely,
Dr. Patrick Lee

Chickenpox
Dear Parents and Guardians,
There has been one case of Chickenpox in Grade 3. Chickenpox is a viral infection. Initial symptoms include fever, tiredness and weakness. An itchy, blister-like rash will appear usually on the face, trunk, and limbs but sometimes in the mouth. The rash will form vesicles within five days. They eventually dry up, crust over and form scabs in another three days. In most cases, the symptoms are mild and they subside without treatment.
Chicken pox is highly contagious and there is a possibility that other students may have been exposed to the virus in the class environment. We need to take a proactive approach in order to prevent further spread of illness.
Students and parents/guardians should observe for signs and symptoms over the next 2-3 weeks. If you suspect that your child may have this illness see a doctor. Please notify the school of any diagnosis. Usually students should remain at home for about 1 week or until the vesicles have dried up.
Students are required to submit a doctor’s certificate, stating the student is fit for school, upon arriving back to school. The student should visit the health room when coming back to school for a screening.
Paying particular attention to personal hygiene at home and at school is important to prevent Chickenpox. If your child develops any rash you must consult a doctor before sending your child to school. Maintaining good air circulation and proper hand washing will help. The school has stepped up cleaning procedures and implemented regular hand washing and increased ventilation. Additionally, if your child is unwell at school, and the health room contacts you to collect your child, please do so as soon as possible.
Sincerely,
Amy Walter, B.Sc. Nursing

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,
Halloween is a festival that is celebrated in a number of countries around the world on October 31st. In Canada, children dress in costumes, play games, and go “trick or treating” for candy. On Thursday, October 31st, we invite all students, teachers and parents to dress up in a Hallowe’en costume and join us in our courtyard for this event.
When students enter the School, they will place their bags in their classroom and then return to the Courtyard. Our Halloween Costume Event will commence at 8:20am in the Courtyard. Students, parents and teachers will have an opportunity to show off their costumes and participate in a costume contest which include: The Best Student Costumes, The Best Teacher Costume, and The Best Parent Costume. Please join us for this event; it is a great opportunity to take photos of your child and his or her friends in costume. This activity will be completed by 8:50 am.
When choosing a costume, please think of safety. Students must be able to move freely and walk without tripping, and must be able to see clearly. Please do not have your child wear a mask to school. If your child’s costume includes a mask please place it his/her backpack until on campus. In addition, parents and students are also reminded that toy guns are not appropriate and not permitted at school. Please do not bring this item to school.
October 31st is also our Community Chest Dress Casual Day. A minimum donation of HK$20 is collected from students participating with a Hallowe’en costume or school-appropriate casual dress. All money raised is donated to Community Chest to support those in need in Hong Kong. Please encourage your child to participate.
We hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Allan Morrison

Good afternoon,
Some parents have expressed their interest in sending candy, chocolate and/or baked goods to school on Halloween for their child to give out to their classmates.
This is allowed at school, but under three conditions:
1) Each child in the class should receive a treat.
2) The candies, chocolate and baked goods need to be store-bought. Please don't send homemade treats and baked goods (due to the School's policy).
3) Please keep in mind that we have a severe peanut allergy in our class, so it would be appreciated if you send candy, chocolate, or baked goods which contains no peanuts.
Thank you and have a great day!
Mr. MacLeod

"Re: Student Grant (2019-2020 School Year)
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As part of the $19.1 billion relief measured announced by the Financial Secretary in August 2019, a one-off student grant of $2,500 for each secondary day-school, primary school and kindergarten student will be provided in the 2019/2020 school year to alleviate parents’ financial burden in defraying education expenses.

Message from CHP Regarding Influenza and Pneumonia Cases in Wuhan
Dear Parents and Guardians,
According to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health, local activity of seasonal influenza has markedly increased indicating that HK has entered influenza season. The CHP anticipates influenza activity will continue to rise in the coming weeks. Also, with the concern over the pneumonia cases in Wuhan, CHP is advising that the public be on alert and pay particular attention to personal hygiene. We need to be proactive in order to prevent the spread of illness in school and when travelling this CNY holiday.
DSC has had an increase in student illness, including fever. CHP has asked for parents/guardians to watch for the health condition of their children. Take your child’s temperature before coming to school. Watch your children for signs or symptoms including fever, muscle pain, malaise, chills, headache, cough, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhea.
If your child has any symptoms the student must stay at home. Please report any illness to the school. If a student develops these symptoms at school then the parents will be called and the student will be sent home immediately. According to CHP, children with fever should seek medical consultation and avoid school until 48 hours after the fever has subsided.
Please note:
Please follow the fever reference chart below, provided by the CHP.
Measuring Method:
- Oral: 37.5C / 99.5 F is a fever
- Ear: 38.0 C / 100.4F is a fever
- Armpit: 37.3C/ 99.1F is a fever
Paying particular attention to personal hygiene at home and at school is important in preventing illness. Getting the seasonal flu vaccination, maintaining good air circulation and washing hands frequently and properly will help. The school is taking precautions to minimize the spread of illness. However, cooperation with parents is vital to stop the spread of illness.
For updated information please visit the CHP’s website at http://www.chp.gov.hk
Sincerely,
January 17, 2019

A head injury is a very common injury, especially in young children. Head injuries are usually the result of a blow to the head or from shaking of the head. The injury can be mild, such as small bruising and swelling, to severe resulting in bleeding in the brain.
Not all head injuries are obvious and symptoms may take hours to days to develop. A person who has recently had a head injury should be continuously monitored for symptoms for several days after the injury. Head injuries can be life threatening and a person should seek medical attention if they develop symptoms.
At DSC we take all head injuries very seriously and strive to keep staff and parents/guardians informed. If a student receives a head injury at school the student will be evaluated by Health Room staff. If the student has no symptoms of a head injury the student will be sent back to class. The parent/guardian will be notified and a Head Injury Letter will be sent home with the student.
In addition, starting on Monday, January 20th, 2020, the Health Room will also be giving a “I Bumped My Head” sticker to younger students and neon green wristbands for all students. This will indicate to staff that the student has received a head injury and the student should be watched for any symptoms. If you see your child at home with a sticker and/or neon green wrist band, please check his or her bag for the Head Injury Letter from the Health Room.
Head injuries are common but can also be serious. We ask you to discuss head injuries with your child. Also, we would like to emphasize the importance of wearing the wristband during school and during extracurricular activities, practices and games.
Health Room direct line is 3658-0525. If you see a call from this number please answer or call us back.
I have included the symptoms of head injury below for your reference.
Sincerely,
Amy Walter

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students:
RE: Influenza Prevention Measures
Given the current situation with the outbreak of the coronavirus, the School, working together with our Health Room Team, will implement a strategy to prevent the spread of germs in the classroom. This will take effect immediately upon resumption of classes on February 3.
This strategy will include daily temperature checks of all staff, students and parents upon entering the campus. The School will open its doors at 7:50 am to allow for the additional time required to conduct the checks. In addition, increasing classroom ventilation by opening windows to the outside and turning on fans; ensuring that a regular hand-washing routine is conducted throughout the day; increased frequency of classroom/hallway and washroom cleanings, and sending any student who does not look well to the Health Room.
We ask that you help us in maintaining a healthy learning environment by checking your child’s temperature and by keeping your child at home if he or she is feeling unwell or has a fever. It is recommended that you consult a doctor if your child has a fever. Please notify the School of any illness and provide the doctor’s note.
Please be reminded that your child must remain home for 48 hours after a fever has subsided and that a doctor’s note is required for any influenza diagnosis.
Measuring Method:
- Oral: 37.5C / 99.5 F is a fever
- Ear: 38.0 C / 100.4F is a fever
- Armpit: 37.3C/ 99.1F is a fever

Sincerely,

Mr. MacLeod

- CHP states it is of prime importance that if a student has a fever, the student should not attend school and not return to school until completely recovered. The student must be symptom free and have no fever for 48 hours (without the use of fever lowering medication) before returning to school. This will be considered an excused absence.
- If a student has a cold or flu he/she can usually return to school within 3 to 5 days after the onset of symptoms. Before sending the student back to school, remember he/she must have the energy to manage a full day of school and have a normal temperature throughout the day.
- If a student has diarrhea or vomiting they should stay home until recovered (24 hrs symptom free) since illness can spread easily.
